Two books designed to fit together that but also come apart. The hardcover book has a hole die-cut into its pages with a softcover collection of essays on art and design that fits inside. The hardcover book is foil-stamped cloth, perfect-bound, 28.5 x 22 cm, 112 pages. The softcover book has a 4-color cover, perfect-bound, with four B&W illustrations, 17.5 x 10.8 cm, 96 pages. Joe Scanlan's columns on art and design originally published in frieze and Artforum are gathered here as one long, picaresque narrative in which democracy plays the amiable lead role, only to be undermined by capitalism. From the Lumière Brothers’ use of their employees in the making of the first film to Tino Sehgal’s use of museum visitors in the production of his art, again and again we regress to the familiar, not on the basis of its merits but because it puts the most people at ease. However vexed we were by modernist ideology, the products resulting from the current consensus-based, consumer-driven service economy are really starting to depress me. All items are subject to prior sale. All inventory is sold on first-order basis and may not
longer be available at the time your order is placed based due to previous sales or orders. Canal Jones
will contact you as soon as possible should we be unable to fulfill your order.
Payment in full for must be received and cleared for all orders before shipment.
Canal Jones accepts institutional orders from Colleges, Libraries, Museums and Universities by
Purchase Order and will ship without prior payment to known clients. Wholesale accounts,
institutional accounts and preferred customer accounts are all available upon
request and review.
Orders paid by credit card and PayPal will be shipped upon receipt; orders paid by check will
ship once your check clears. Books awaiting payment will be held for no more than two weeks.

Shipping terms
Orders placed with us usually ship within 48 hours or two business days. Shipping costs are based on book weight plus the cost of materials, handling, tracking, insurance (if greater than the default insurance coverage of the carrier) and signature confirmation if needed. All shipments are insured for the full value of the item plus the cost of the shipment.
