About this Item
First edition. Publisher's small label affixed to verso of front cover: "Published by National American Woman Suffrage Association. Headquarters, Warren, Ohio". 16mo. 34pp. Stapled printed wrappers. First leaf is headed: "Why Should Women Vote?" Owner's early pencil annotations about woman suffrage on verso of front cover with pencil scoring throughout the text in an unknown hand, covers are worn, soiled, and separated at spine with early external tape mend on length of spine, the text block shaken, a good, complete copy. The 1908 publication date is determined from internal evidence in the printed text, noting that Wyoming women had the vote for 39 years, and quoting articles from as late as August, 1908. Blackwell was a life-long advocate of woman suffrage and women's rights, and the daughter of Lucy Stone, who published the 'Woman's Journal,' Alice Stone Blackwell successfully united the American Suffrage Association and the rival National Woman Suffrage Association, and helped found the League of Women Voters in Massachusetts [see Blain et al. *Feminist Companion to Literature in English,* p. 101].
