The Case Against Creating the Office of Vice Chancellor [Romilly, Sir Samuel (1757-1818)]. Objections to the Project of Creating a Vice Chancellor of England. The Second Edition. To Which is Added, A Letter from the Author to a Noble Lord. London: Printed for T. Cadell and W. Davies by J. M'Creery, 1813. [3]-44 pp. Half-title lacking. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound in recent quarter morocco over cloth boards, gilt title and date to spine. Negligible light fading to boards. Light toning to interior, negligible light soiling to final page, small early annotation identifying the author to title page, interior otherwise fresh. $350. * Second, expanded edition. Romilly was a respected lawyer and Whig politician. Here, he argues against what would become the Administration of Justice Act of 1813, establishing an additional judicial office of "vice-chancellor" in the Court of Chancery, on the grounds that it would muddle the hierarchy of the court and make the Lord Chancellor's work harder to carry out. The "noble lord" to whom the additional letter is addressed is Lord Redesdale, whose reply to the first edition appeared earlier in 1813.
