A scarce first UK edition of this transcendentalist work by Sampson Reed. First UK edition. Originally published in Boston, 1926. Sampson Reed's most important work, which influenced Ralph Waldo Emerson's Transcendentalism. Disbound. Sampson Reed (1800-1880) was a druggist and proponent of Swedenborgianism. Observations on the Growth of the Mind remains Reed's single most important work because its ideas serve as the basis of the Transcendental aesthetic theory. Swedenborgianism is the belief system developed from the writings of the Swedish theologian Emanuel Swedenborg (1688 1772). Swedenborg claimed to have received a New Revelation of Jesus Christ with differences from Pauline Christianity. It is claimed by its followers as a new form of Christianity. The movement was founded on the belief that God explained the spiritual meaning of the the Scriptures to Swedenborg as a means of revealing the truth of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. A powerful work on the changing of the world in line with the changing of a mind which supplied transcendentalists with the content for their revolutionary aesthetic theory. It encourages the theory that the artist achieves form by giving assertions to the permutation of nature rather than forcing artificial proportions upon it. Disbound, with part of the original spine. Externally, sound with loose threads to the spine and light discolouration to the first and last pages. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. Good.
