Xxvi,205pp. An extraordinary memoir, by a talented and clever son of slave-holding property owners in Haiti during the eighteenth century, telling his own side of the slave uprising and the revolution in Haiti, during the time of the Anglo-French war and the French Revolution. Educated in Paris, and a military officer, he fled Haiti for Baltimore, supported himself by giving concerts and balls, then returned to Haiti to fight again. His view of slavery is nothing if not patriarchal. Translated into English by a descendant who came upon the manuscript in New Orleans. Light stains to outer hinge, else fine, in a dust jacket showing chips and edge tears. Seller Inventory # 006856
