Item description from seller
Entire issue, September 1, 1952, in original pictorial wraps with a portrait of the author by Eisenstaedt, light general wear and soiling, discrete archival reenforcement noted along spine edge, text loosed from staples thus laid-in, rear 20 pages or so water stained at bottom edge, NOT affecting Hemingway piece. A decent copy that presents well as noted by the pictures; a newsstand copy, not obscured by any mailing label. The first appearance of the Pulitzer prize-winning story of an old Cuban fisherman and his desperate battle with a huge marlin and predatory sharks, illustrated with a color photo by Eisenstaedt, and several drawings by Sickles. Issue also includes an editorial titled, A Great American Storyteller, that introduces the popularized symbolism in the story thusly, "Perhaps the old man is Hemingway himself, the great fish is this great story and the sharks are the critics." See Hanneman C370.
