Entire issue, September 1, 1952, in original pictorial wraps with a portrait of the author by Eisenstaedt, light general wear, overall clean and bright as noted in picture, but for minor rubbing and a crease at lower edge, and a mild storage odor, mailing label at lower edge. The first appearance of the Pulitzer prize-winning story of an old Cuban fisherman and his desperate battle with a huge marlin and predatory sharks, illustrated with a color photo by Eisenstaedt, and several drawings by Sickles. Issue also includes an editorial titled, A Great American Storyteller, that introduces the popularized symbolism in the story thusly, "Perhaps the old man is Hemingway himself, the great fish is this great story and the sharks are the critics."
