[2], [32, Prefatio], 614 (Ethica & Tractatus), [32, Index Rerum], 112 (Compendium), [8] pp. Bound in contemporary full vellum with yapped edges, holograph title on the spine. Covers marked and soiled, spine heavily darkened, faint blue stray marking to textblock edge; joints tight, endsheets cracked at turn-ins exposing vellum and boards beneath, owner name or notation to front pastedown, free endpaper and one to errata page at rear. The posthumous works of the 17th century philosopher of the Enlightenment, published in the year of his death by some of his closest friends. It features the first edition of his magnum opus Ethics-- a groundbreaking refutation of Descartes modeled on Euclid's geometry hailed by Hegel and generations of philosophers-- as well as the Tractatus Politicus, the Tractatus de Intellectus Emendatione, and the Epistolae, as well as a work on grammar of the Hebrew language, Compendium Grammatices Linguae Hebraeae. His works would be banned as heretical by the Catholic Church for the next hundred years, read and studied in secret until the 19th century, when he became widely and openly accepted as one of the greatest philosophers of all time.
