The vanishingly scarce first edition of this contemporary account of the Bristol Riots of 1831, in which rioters set fire to significant parts of the city, including the Bishop"s Palace and parts of Queen Square. The first edition of this very scarce work.Solicitor Thomas John Manchee presents a defence of the magistrates that were accused of having a slow and ineffective response to the riots, and refutes accusations that the authorities were negligent and cowardly.The riots took place as a response to the failure of the second Reform Bill, which had aimed to address inequalities in parliamentary representation. After a few days, the military was deployed, leading to a violent suppression of the unrest, and the use of lethal force.Undated; dated 1831 via the British Library.Endpapers renewed.With the bookplate of R.
