The first reprint of the First Edition that was originally published on Nov. 24, 1859 in a run of 1,250 copies (actually I think a scholar -- Morse Peckham? -- may have shown the real publication date was a day or two later), with the Bacon and Whewell quotes on the page dated Down, Oct. 1, 1859. Frontispiece, xx, 1 leaf, 426 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine, in dust jacket (unclipped). Freeman 572. Thinker's Library 138. Uncommon; prior to 1964, any reprints of the First Edition were rare (the Harvard Facsimile published that year with an introduction by Ernst Mayr has now become uncommon in cloth). Darlington's Foreword = pp. xi-xx. The frontispiece is of the manuscript in Lady Barlow's collection of the 'Whale-Bone' Passage, which upon Charles Lyell's protests, Darwin omitted from later editions (his striking of it is visible in the MS leaf).
