Ink drawing. One octavo sheet of cardstock, measuring approximately 5¾" x 9"; image measures approximately 5" x 7". A bit of light wear and a bit of light soiling at the extremities, near fine with the image sharp. Signed "Kemble" in the lower portion of the drawing. The ink drawing depicts a startled and frustrated owl, watching from its nest as a cannonball breaks off a nearby limb. The top portion of the limb forms a drop cap "H." A pencil inscription in the lower margin (in an unknown hand) reads: "How the Yankees came to Blackwood Sta." The recto has various marginal printer's marks, including "Nov 15," and a publisher's rubberstamp on the verso states: "Art Department, The Century Co., Union Square, New York City." E. W. Kemble's career as a book illustrator began in 1884 when he was called upon to illustrate the first edition of Mark Twain's *Huckleberry Finn*, the initial chapters of which first appeared in *The Century Magazine*. He went on to illustrate other works by Twain, George W. Cabell, Harriet Beecher Stowe and others, in addition to his own books. A charming drawing by a noted American illustrator. A patient search through two or three decades of *The Century Magazine* would certainly identify the piece it accompanied. …
