Add to basket[light shelfwear to bottom edges, tiny rip in cloth at top of spine; the jacket is moderately edgeworn and a bit faded at the spine, with shallow chipping along the top edge, a bit of paper loss at both ends of the spine, and some surface-scarring to the lower section of the spine]. (cartoon drawings) A history of humor, highlighting "the health-giving powers of humor, the pain dispensing powers of wit, the value of laughter to the salesman, the speaker, the politician or to the tired soul beset by his daily problems." Although jacket-blurbed as a "sound, informative and altogether entertaining volume," there is also a patina of pedantry, as the author dutifully runs through all the varieties of humor -- ridicule, wit, riddles, conundrums, puns, repartee, etc. (with copious examples of each) -- perhaps due to his academic credentials as "a member of the Department of Classical Languages and Archaeology at the University of Tennessee [and] the author of many articles on various aspects of humor which have appeared in several Psychological and Classical journals" (which are of course well-known hotbeds of belly-laughs). The proceedings are enlivened a bit by the cartoon illustrations of Ted Key (famous as the creator of the newspaper strip "Hazel"), but it's not hard to imagine an altogether different sort of book that might have been written by, say, Richard Armour (in which case it would have been called "It All Started with the Cavemen").
