Former ownership inscription on front flyleaf: "For Willie, with sillious (?) love. Oct. 30th, '77." Pages are clean; binding is tight. A very clean copy. Referenced in the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL) 9575. William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American novelist, literary critic, and playwright nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters." This is a romantic comedy about a steamboat engineer named Blake who tries to win the hand of the lady aristocrat, Leslie. Five parts: "In the Parlor of the Ponwasset Hotel," "'In the Fayre Forest,'" "A Slight Misunderstanding," "Mrs. Murray's Triumph," "Blake Saving Doubt," and "Mr. Charles Bellingham's Diplomacy.".
