First edition thus, it appeared first as an appendix to Charles Bray's The Philosophy of Necessity, 1841 (NCBEL v.3, 1605), in the section labelled "Religion. The Growth of Liberal Theology". Bray (1811-1884) was the author's brother-in-law; he gives a cxiv (114) page "introduction" to this 252 page essay. Miss Hennell (1802-1843) had died of tuberculosis the year before. Bray, his extended family, and others, including Mary Ann Evans, were dedicated to advancing the idea of universal brotherhood. From Mary Hennell's page one: "A slight review of some of the modifications which the principle has assumed in past ages, and of its operation in the present, may be useful in considering its prospects for the future" Many historical societies are examined and evaluated, including "Essenes", "Anabaptists", "St. Simon", "Godwin's Political System", "Orbiston", "Zoar", "Robert Owen", "New Harmony", "Fourierism", and a few more, even "Cheese Makers of the Jura" and "Poor Colonies of Holland". With the ownership signature of Clementina Black (1853-1922), ". an English writer, feminist and pioneering trade unionist, closely connected with Marxist and Fabian socialists. She worked for women's rights at work and for women's suffrage" (Wikipedia). Very little wear, top edge dust soiled, a Very Good copy.
