Very good, first edition and earlier printing. The John W. Lovell Company was succeeded by the United States Book Company of which Lovell, Coryell & Company was a subsidiary, which was subsequently taken over by American Publisher's Company. Includes frontispiece and tissue. "Authorized Edition" and "With a critical introduction by Henry James." Copyright page is followed by facsimile letter from Kipling. There is no Table of Contents. Maroon cloth covered boards, with beveled edges and gilt lettering and decorations on front board and spine. The original publisher's name "Lovell" is printed in gilt at tail of spine. Upper page edges are gilt. Boards are somewhat sun-darkened and with faint scuffs overall, more so on spine. Edges at head and tail of board spine are crimped and with tiny 1/8" vertical creases that are rubbed and/or fraying. All fore-edge corner tips have minimal rub-throughs. Side and lower page edges are age-toned. Light age-toning to text pages, else internally clean. Diagonal creasing at lower external corners of pp. 229-239, does not appear to be intentional dog-eared. A few small smudges/spots on end-papers; back inside gutter has small split.
