First printing, second state (no priority) of Forster's second book on Alexandria, where he worked as a Chief Searcher for the British Red Cross as a conscientious objector during the first World War. Forster's collected sketches of the ancient and modern city include essays on the ruined Lighthouse of Alexandria, the city's founding by Alexander the Great, the lives of Clement and Athenasius, the poetry of C.P. Cavafy, and Forster's own failed efforts to frequent a Den of Vice. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original quarter blue cloth with decorative Cambridge Blue paper boards running horizontally, second state ("Mr. Leonard Woolf states that no priority should be assigned to these two states," Kirkpatrick). 80, [2] pages.
