4to. Original Edition. Red, blind-stamped pebbled cloth, with titling to front and a vignette of a gilt mounted Indian in full headdress, attempting to rope a fleeing mustang. Gilt titling to spine with gilt decorations of many natural scenes, including deer, bowhunting, a wolf, beavers, long-billed aquatic bird fishing, and a man in a driftboat. Evidence of rebacking, with original spine laid down. Surface rubbing to extremities. Very solidly bound. Rubbing and wear to extremities. 468 pp. NOTE: Most likely photocopy of fold-out mapaffixed at front: "Map of The Californias" (1845, Farnham) 13 1/2 in. x 10 3/4 in. and another, clearly a photocopy, opposite p. 148. It is well known that not every copy of this book came with maps, but a previous owner tipped in reproduction maps. Farnham was the leader of a group of Oregon-bound settlers, known as the 'Peoria Party'. Seller Inventory # 87906
