Folded map, measuring 28 in. x 21 in. First edition of a fabulous map of Alaska crafted by Ernest Dudley Chase, and published for the Alaska News Agency in Anchorage, Alaska, printed the year Alaska officially became one of the United States, with dozens of graphics, portraits, informational insets, a list of towns with matching keys, industries which make up the economy, natural wonders, founders, mountain ranges, historical buildings, miniature scenes of sites of extraordinary beauty, facts about the landscape (tundra, islands), small villages and native populations, wildlife, natural resources, and devices to convey the scale and size of this landmass and its waterways, peninsulas and islands. Orange, black and white -- just a lovely (and lovingly crafted) piece of work! Just one or two little cracks at creases, but overall map in beautiful condition. Ernest Dudley Chase (1878-1966) decided -- at age 49 -- that he wanted cease his postcard and greeting card business in order to make maps. Chase became especially known for his pictorial maps, which were deeply researched, faithfully rendered, exquisitely detailed, and often with varying degrees of whimsicality, depending upon the subject. During his career he created over fifty maps, including but not limited to, depictions of the U.S., Boston, Nazi Germany, The British Isles, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal, WW II Atlantic/Indian Oceans; Pacific Battle Map, Total War Battle Map, and even one entitled "World Wonders".
