72 pp. First Edition. Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1957) was best known for penning Zorba the Greek. However, before his success he was hard-pressed to earn a living as a journalist. In 1907, as a young man he moved from Athens to Paris to absorb the high culture of France and study philosophy. He returned to Athens in 1910. Between 1911 and 1915 he collaborated with the Athens publishing house Fexis in translating works of ancient to modern Greece while he pursued his journalism. Translations of his books into other European languages did not appear until his old age, hence he found it difficult to earn a living by writing, which led him to write a great deal, including a large number of translations from French, German, and English, and curiosities such as French fiction and Greek primary school texts, mainly because he needed the money. His first book of Greek translations was published in 1911. This is his second book of Greek translation?of Plato's works. Despite being written in the same language, ancient and modern Greek do not convey the same "understanding" to their texts?therefore the need for a "translation."
