DNB XII: 57-9. Called his "chief work" by the DNB, Lodge commenced work on the first volume in 1814 and completed the project in 1834. Lodge (1756-1839) was a historical scholar and became an expert in heraldry. Preface, appendix to preface, table of contents, list of galleries from which portraits were obtained, list of subscribers (all at the beginning of Volume I). Appendix to preface with testimonials from Sir Walter Scott and Joseph Harding. Each portrait is accompanied by a biographical and historical account. A total of 240 portraits. Rubbed and scuffed at edges. Prevous owners' bookplates on front pastedowns.
