Eighty plates and text illustr, 9.5 x 6, full leather; 826, 769. Covers poor, lacking one cover and spines, disbound, lower page edges stained and some of those pages (and plates) stuck together, staining, damp spotting, smudging, occasional spotting, text block cracked, loose signatures and pages, a few small tears. Well used, sold as is. FIRST ED. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Dr. Smith was appointed the surgeon general of Pennsylvania, originated the plan for the removal of the wounded from the battlefield to large hospitals in major cities, organized a corps of surgeons on steamers that were used as floating hospitals at the siege of Yorktown and tended to the wounded after various battles, i.e., Cold Harbor and Antietam.
