About this Item

Description:

A twelfth printing of the true first edition, published in October 1943. With a two-page preface written by C.S. Lewis at Magdalen College, Oxford in 1940 to the fore. The book was first published in October 1940, and was something of a best-seller, going through eleven reprints in the next three years of the Second World War. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards, with a paper label to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked, having been protected by the dustwrapper since 1943. The paper label is also beautifully clean, complete without any damage. The boards are very thin as the publisher's had to conform to wartime publishing restrictions. There is a very slight reading lean to the fragile binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with a neat contemporary ownership name and date to the front pastedown (hidden under the flap of the dustwrapper). The wartime paper is very clean and still white, and there is none of the usual foxing to the pastedowns. There are some neat annotations and lines in the margins, but these are in feint pencil and could be erased if so wished. ***In a very good original fragile red and white printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 3s. 6d. net. The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just some very slight loss at the top and bottom of the spine which does not affect the lettering. Some very light creasing, nicks and very small closed tears to the extremities. The wear is commensurate with the age and fragility of the book, which was produced to war economy standards. The dustwrapper is only lightly browned with age (being a white background). ***192mm x130mm. 148 pages including Index, plus a one-page list of books published in the Christian Challenge Series at the back of the book. ***Contents: I. Introductory; II. Divine Omnipotence; III. Divine Goodness; IV. Human Wickedness; V. The Fall of Man; VI. Human Pain; VII. Human Pain, continued; VIII. Hell; IX. Animal Paint; X. Heaven; Appendix. ***'I do not know how other people will be affected by this little book, but I myself am very grateful for it. It is a new treatment of the old, old problem with an arresting personal note. It says so many things which seem to me to need saying to-day, and traverses so many glibly repeated modern opinions that it will help many people, I think, to revise what they have taken for granted and face possibilities which had not occurred to them. It is a really remarkable book.' - Dr. Edwyn Bevan in The Spectator (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A wartime printing of "The Problem of Pain", in its original dustwrapper, in very nice condition. A fragile book with thin boards and a very thin dustwrapper. It is extremely difficult to find copies of this wartime publication in the original dustwrapper in reasonable condition now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 8120x
