1968. First American Edition. 112 pages. No dust jacket. This is an ex-Library book. Brown cloth boards with lettering. Contains black and white and colour illustrations and plates. Ex-Library copy, with expected inserts, stamps and inscriptions. Clean pages, plates and illustrations with light tanning and mild foxing throughout. More pronounced to free endpapers and pastedowns. Last plate is detached but still present. Heavy scuffing marks to pastedowns and free endpapers. Hinges are heavily cracked with exposed netting. Ink stamp inscription and pen marks to top and bottom edges textblock. Binding remains firm. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces and bumping to corners. Lettering is bright and clear. Moderate sunning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Moderate splits to spine ends and corners causing cloth to be frayed. Laminated dust jacket with shelf sticker affixed near spine heel, flaps taped down over boards. Khaki colored cloth. Some surface peeling to front pastedown from removal of library stickers; discard stamp, partial sticker, and pencil notation on front free endpaper; discard stamp and pencil notations on title page; library pocket removed from rear free endpaper. Color frontispiece plus three other color plates and numerous illustrations within text. More than 200 b/w images in rear plate section. Davis reviews the social history of packaging, the materials of packaging including pottery, glass, paper, foil, wood, cardboard, and metal, as well as package design. Bibliography. Index. Although the book favors British labeling designs, there are numerous American examples as well.
