Previous owner's inscription to front paste-down and free end paper. Cracking to hinges, no damage to end papers. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout, binding remains reasonably firm. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Cloth has minor damp and dust stains. Book has a slight forward lean. A scarce First Edition from the founder of the world-wide Scout Movement in Very Good condition. Baden-Powell's whimsical self-reliance work, published in 1939, followed his farewell to Scouting in 1937 and his death in 1941. An illustrated cream cloth hardback with a little marking here and there slight wear to corner points. No inscription and clean throughout the soft white paper which has a very small amount of spotting especially to last text page. Rear blank free end-paper neatly clipped. (price-clipped) [spine slightly turned, light soiling to top edge, light foxing to fore-edge; the jacket has small tears at several corners, and is missing a 1/2" x 2" vertical strip from the bottom of the spine panel, which is also a bit rubbed and lightly stained and has a little more paper loss at the crown (including part of the title)]. (pen and ink sketches) The founder of the Boy Scouts -- or the "Chief Scout," as he's billed here -- tells "stories of the wild animals of the jungle and people of many lands," with a solid bit of advice for his readers: "that you should always try to rely on yourself and not on what others can do for you."
