About this Item
A scarce first edition of Francis Paget's tale to address the upper ranks of society, in a half calf binding. First edition, in a half calf binding with marbled boards. Written by English clergyman and author, Francis Edward Paget, who wrote many works on the church and social reforms. This particular work is an address to the younger members of the higher classes of society, in the form of a story. Paget aims to bring awareness to the poor treatment and suffering of the working-class members of society, who assist the wealthy with their "artificial wants". With an ink inscription of Estcourt to the first blank. Bound by Pelton, Tunbridge Wells, with their bookbinders label to the front paste down. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Slight cracking to the head of the front joint. A touch of fading to the spine. Front hinge slightly strained, but holding firm. Bookbinders label to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot to the first and last pages. Good.
