About this Item
Blue cloth. Edition limited to 150 numbered copies. Corrigenda slip tipped in. "The doors let in a flood of morning light upon the sudden appearance of the Charioteer [of Delphi]. At a few paces from us on a low pedestal he stands like a column of bronze; the sun catches the inlay of his eyes which flash for an instant, and puts a gleam about the corners of his arrogant lips. The apparition is startling: this effigy of a beautiful and sullen young tyrant, long dead, seems to have come back to life. Or was he living behind the locked door and become immobile this instant only? His arms and feet still show the sleek grain of the living flesh from which they seem actually to have been cast; the ringlets and wire eyelashes glimmer and glitter in the light. We know that Nero in youth looked unlike himself, that he wore the beard of the Ahenobarbi and showed the docile expression of the pupil of Seneca. Yet my friend and I both exclaim simultaneously, 'Nero young!'" The artist Charles Ricketts travelled to Greece with his partner Charles Shannon in February 1911. Halliwell A55.
