Within the walls of an elegant mansion on New York City's East Side hang some of the greatest paintings in the world, from Bellini's "St. Francis," Rembrandt's "Polish Rider," and Fragonard's "Progress of Love" through Turner's landscapes and Whistler's portraits. This sumptuous volume, with its excellent color reproductions and fine details, offers an appealing overview of the collection, an opportunity for both aesthetic study and pure pleasure. The brief artist biographies and accompanying short essays are merely serviceable, but they provide guideposts for this vicarious tour of a superb museum.
