About this Item

Description:

B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. There is some light rubbing to the spine joints also. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name and address to the front endpaper. "Constructed from temporary materials (primarily staff, a combination of plaster and burlap fiber) , almost all the fair's various buildings and attractions were pulled down in late 1915. Intended to fall into pieces at the close of the fair (reportedly because the architect believed every great city needed ruins) , the only surviving building on the Exposition grounds, Bernard Maybeck's Palace of Fine Arts, remained in place, slowly falling into disrepair (although the hall used to display painting and sculpture during the Fair was repurposed as a garage for jeeps during World War II). The Palace, including the colonnade with its signature weeping women and rotunda dome, was completely reconstructed in the 1960s and a seismic retrofit was completed in early 2009. The Exploratorium, an interactive science museum, occupied the northern 2/3 of the Palace from 1969 to 2013; the city-owned Palace of Fine Arts Theater, has occupied the southern 1/3 since 1970.". Hardcover. ix, 151p., b&w photographic plates and a small map of the grounds, 6.5x4.5 inch salmonpink cloth boards with mild external hand-soil and edgewear, slight browning within and a narrow gutter-gap at front hinge, a good (good-only) copy: generally sound, clean and unmarked. The "symbolism" the author explains has a lot to do with being high-minded about statues such as "The Rising Sun" (a very naked guy with wings) and "Descending Night" and "Earth" (naked women). Concerning the riser, James observes that "This fresh strong young sun is just about to start on his journey. the wind blowing thru his hair, the vigor of young life pulsating thru his body, he will start the chest forward and move those outstretched wings. WALK TOWARDS HIM [emphasis in the original] and you will see him begin his journey thru space" -- a nice interactive touch. Also find on p.9 a discussion of the architectural building-blocks of exhibit sites, namely "artificial travertine" (not merely chicken-wire slathered in plaster of Paris, as we had suspected).
