Volume I of a two volume set of the uncommon and major work of English theologian Daniel Whitby; very scarce in the first edition and illustrated with a folding map. The first edition of this work in a full calf binding. This is the first volume of a two volume set, containing the major work of Daniel Whitby (1638 1726), who was a controversial English theologian and biblical commentator. This first volume contains a paraphrase with commentary on the Four Gospels and the Acts of the Holy Apostles, with an index and table of phrases and matters contained in the commentary, and a chronological index to the New Testament. In this commentary, Whitby opposes John Tillotson's view of hell torments. Illustrated with a folding map of several countries, cities, towns and other places mentioned in the New Testament. First editions of this work are very scarce. In a full calf binding. Externally sound, with several losses to the leather to the spine and boards, the largest loss being to the rear joint. Shelf wear to the extremities. Splitting to the joints but held firmly by the cords. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Old woodworm damage to the lower perimeter of the pages to the chronological index. Good.
