PASS is about collaboration; it draws on the talents and energies of parents to assist educators in raising the educational standards for every child. Using an easy-to-follow approach, PASS shows parents what can be done to help their children succeed. PASS is a long-term, parent-friendly, skill development program. Its main purpose is to train parents to work with their children at home to instill those general study skills that are universally recognized as being linked to school success. This family self-help manual consists of two major parts. The first part teaches parents what it takes to become efficient learners. Here, the focus is on study skills, including the principles and characteristics of well-known learning strategies. The second part demonstrates to parents the importance of their own learning skills, and how to reinforce critical study habits in their children at home. These are skills parents can easily learn, either by themselves or with other parents.

About the Author

John R. Ban is a professor emeritus of education and was a coordinator of administrator programs at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana. Long active in civic affairs, he has been president of a school board, chairman of a metropolitan police commission, and a member of many community committees. He has been a public school teacher and university administrator. Dr. Ban is the author of several books and numerous journal articles on public education. He has worked extensively with teachers, students, and parents. He has also been active in establishing parenting workshops for prison inmates and violence education programs for inner-city parents. Dr. Ban is married and the father of four children.
