How we leave each other can often say as much about who we are as how we say hello or maintain relationships with persons, places, and things around us. This theme is a constant in these remembrances by Montana outdoors writer Rudner, as she writes of the many farewells along the way in her search for identity, solitude, and community.

Rudner, a journalist, provides a wonderful exploration of human identity in terms of how people say good-bye to places, things, and people. Some of the partings are temporary or casual, more are crises painfully but sensitively explored--most poignantly of all in afterword, a letter from a long-term friend stating that his cancer was probably in its last stages and her own reply, which was never received. Rudner loves people, poems, and books but most of all the wonderful variety of nature, especially in Montana. Out of each good-bye, Rudner finds a gift, an ability to let go, a new beginning.
