Half-title + TP + Dedication page + Acknowledgements + Table of Contents + [1] = half title + 3-246, Octavo. First Edition. This first edition contains the original six essays. Two more were added to the 1968 addition, whose subtitle became Eight Exercises in Political Thought. The book contains a preface (entitled "The Gap between Past and Future") and six essays: "Tradition and the Modern Age", "The Concept of History: Ancient and Modern", "What is Authority?", "What is Freedom?", "The Crisis in Education", and "The Crisis in Culture: Its Social and Its Political Significance."All essays explore the space, or time, between poorly remembered past and the highly uncertain future. Arendt argues that the modern sense of self exists between past and present, and that this "between-ness" is acutely evident in the everyday life of modern political subjects. Her essays then venture to analyze what freedom, authority, education, culture, and tradition might look like when they are suspended between a romanticized past and often dreadful future. Is freedom still what we want, even in the face of uncertainty? Is the authority of yore still legitimate, even amidst crumbling traditions? Arendt asks these and other questions in an effort to interrogate where we are in history, and what we want from it. Publisher's original tan, black, and blue dust jacket with white, black, and tan lettering. Original light blue boards with black and gilt lettering to front cover and spine. Just a bit of wear to the edges and corners of the dust jacket. Otherwise, a truly lovely copy of this important work from Arendt. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Seller Inventory # 1469
