- Biography & Autobiography
Recorded during the last 13 years of his life, Cocteau's diary was kept a secret until 1983. this first of six projected volumes reveals Cocteau's life from 1951 to 1953. In it, he makes asides about Picasso, writes Oedipus rex, admires Stalin, travels through Europe, and engages in gross generalizations about Americans. With line drawings from Cocteau's original journal, Past Tense is a literary event -- a window into Cocteau's life and creativity as he wanted them to be remembered.

For the last 13 years of his life Cocteau kept a diary, the existence of which was revealed only recently. This first in a projected series of volumes runs from the middle of 1951 through 1952, and finds him installed in a friend's villa on the Riviera. Fresh from the triumph of his finest work, the movie Orpheus , Cocteau maintains a prodigious level of activity: preparing a new play for production, shooting a "private film" for his hostess, lecturing, painting, dashing off articles. Too self-absorbed to chronicle his times, this most protean of writers instead chronicled himselfwith results that will nevertheless interest any student of his era.Grove Koger, Boise P.L., Id.

Store description
Since 2005, Shelley and Son Books has been passionate about books, and preserving their importance for current and future generations. We believe that virtue and beauty have a close relationship. By reading we gain knowledge. In knowledge we find things that inform our choices and beliefs. Therefore, as booksellers, we see that books have an aesthetic value and a heuristic value. We specialize in The Inklings, primarily "The Seven'": C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers, G. K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Owen Barfield and Charles Williams. A sub-specialty is our significant collection of Christian Theology. But you'll also find works across the centuries, first editions, signed copies, and even modern books, too, across a broad selection of categories and genres. Customer service is of utmost importance to us, and our friendly staff is always happy to help. We assure our clients books of quality, as each copy is carefully graded and shipped with care. Located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, we can be found on Main Street in Hendersonville, North Carolina, (just south of Asheville). We are primarily an online bookstore, but we invite you to make an appointment for an on-site visit! Shelley and Son Books is owned by Stan Shelley. …
