The original publisherâ s red cloth boards remain wonderfully bright and sharp, showing virtually no shelf-wear or fading, while the gilt lettering and emblem on the spine are completely unoxidised and brilliant. The binding is exceptionally tight and perfectly square, indicating the book has been gently handled and well-stored. The text block is impressively clean, with the pages remaining crisp and bright; the slight foxing is almost entirely confined to the fore-edge and does not intrude into the margins. The scarce original dust jacket is largely complete and unclipped (showing the original pricing on the spine), presenting very well with only light rubbing to the extremities, a touch of faint toning to the spine panel, and minor nicks at the spine ends. Catalogue Note This is a true first edition, as confirmed by the primary publication statement on the copyright page. It retains its original, unclipped dust jacket, which is notably scarce in such well-preserved condition. This copy features a clear presentation inscription in ink on the front free endpaper: "From Halliday Sutherland / To C. K. Broadhurst / my book on 25 / 11 / 36 / with best wishes." C. K. Broadhurst was the founder of the established independent bookseller Broadhursts of Southport. This inscription, dated in the very month of the book's release, establishes a direct link between the author and a prominent figure in the British book trade. First editions of this title retaining their original dust jackets are uncommon on the open market, and copies bearing contemporary authorial inscriptions to identifiable figures are particularly scarce. Following the immense success of The Arches of the Years and A Time to Keep, Halliday Sutherland's In My Path continues his engaging series of autobiographical medical memoirs. Drawing from his diverse experiences as a physician, Sutherland offers a rich tapestry of reflections on medicine, societal shifts, and the fascinating individuals he encountered throughout the early twentieth century. His writing blends keen clinical observation with a profound, often humorous, understanding of human nature, cementing his reputation as one of the era's most compelling medical essayists.
