"Mr. Osborne's new play, presented at the Royal Court Theatre in July 1965 to members of the English Stage Society, shows how a young, able, and ambitious officer of the Imperial and Royal Army of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was, through his homosexuality, blackmailed into becoming a spy for Tsarist Russia. Spanning the years between 1890 and 1914, the play reveals not only the tragedy of an individual, but the character of the unique - and till now largely forgotten - institution in which he achieved a high rank."
