Add to basketNew York: D. Appleton and Co., 1841. Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) is often considered "the first modern sociologist;" with typical Victorian energy she produced works on history, political economy, and children's literature, supporting herself from an early age solely by her writing. For such an important historical figure, it is surprising that no comprehensive bibliography of her works seems to exist. This is an uncommon work; no copies of this edition appear in WorldCat or Copac. Copac notes a London edition from the same year held at the National Library of Scotland. This is a Very Good copy of what must be the First American Edition; identified on the half-title as "Tales for the People and Their Children." Green cloth binding, decoratively stamped on the covers, and with gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; 174 pages. There are two contemporary previous-owner signatures, one pencil and one ink, on the FFEP. Bumped corners and rubbed at head and foot of spine. There is (very) occasional spotting throughout, and some pencil scribbles on the rear endpapers. These are minor defects; basically a very sound copy of an uncommon title. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
