About this Item
[good sound copy, light shelfwear, vintage bookseller's ticket (Dr. Henry Goldman / Fine Books / Los Angeles) on rear pastedown; jacket has minor chipping at spine ends, slight fading to spine, modest wear and very shallow paper loss along bottom edge]. Sixteen short, punchy stories by this British journalist and diplomat (1882-1961), who spent much of his young life as an itinerant manual laborer ("navvy" in British slang), an experience that gave him ample material for these tales of "grim humor and unholy violence." "London, Manchester, Liverpool; the docks, yards and mills; the dens and high roads between -- these are the settings for the adventures and accidents that form the life of that roystering species of man." Kenney was an ardent socialist whose involvement with the Independent Labour Party led him to London in 1910, where he first managed the Publications Department of the 'Socialist Review' and then ran the ILP s Literature Department; in 1912, he became one of the first editors of the socialist newspaper the "Daily Herald." During World War I he was a key figure in the development of British propaganda policy and practice, his work in Norway resulting in thousands of pro-British articles appearing in the Norwegian press; following the war, he continued to work in the field of propaganda, and was instrumental in the establishment of the British Council in 1934. During World War II, he served as Director of the Northern Section of the Foreign Division in the Ministry of Information. His autobiography, "Westering," was published in 1939. The present volume was apparently the only published collection of his short fiction, and is most uncommon, especially in jacket. Seller Inventory # 26935
