About this Item
The first edition of Captain Godfrey Mundy's detailed account of his time in India with the British Army, illustrated with many plates illustrated by the author. The first edition of this work. A really quite pleasant copy of this rare work which is even more difficult to find in good condition. Complete in two volumes. In the original publishers' binding. Half-titles are present, together with the publishers' adverts. A collection of illustrations and snapshots on the author's experiences during his military and hunting tour in India. An engrossing look into colonial India in the early nineteenth century. The plates were done after drawings by the author and are feature hunting scenes with tigers and elephants. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding map, and twelve plates. Collated, complete. Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, and five plates. Collated, complete. Written by Captain Godfrey Mundy, a British Army officer, who was the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey. In 1825 he took part in the Siege of Bharatpur in the Indian princely state of Baharatpur. Two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of Volume I. Rebound in a quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Minor rubbing to the boards and spines. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedowns. Stamp to the head of the front pastedowns. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots. Tidemarks to the plates of both volumes, and to some of the surrounding pages. Very Good.
