About this Item
203 x 254mm; unpaginated [8 leaves]. Pioneering work on the structural processing of images by computers, by one of the UK's leading AI researchers in the 1960s and 1970s. This technical report (for the Medical Research Council's Psycholinguistics Research Unit) introduces the concept of hierarchical 'picture grammars' based on Noam Chomsky's theory of linguistic syntax. The idea of using structural models to represent and analyze data has since become a major research theme in machine learning, and has led to many important applications in computer vision, robotics, and natural language processing. Max Clowes (1944? 1981) was a pioneer of computer vision, and co-inventor of the 'Huffman-Clowes' system of labelling complex objects for computer analysis. A version of this technical report was later published in the groundbreaking Machine Intelligence 1 (1967), but this printing is exceptionally scarce, with no copies located in libraries worldwide. Very good condition; stapled; inscription to upper left corner of the cover, otherwise clean and bright. Seller Inventory # 2410732401
