History of the instruments from primitive origins to the Latin American beat, via classical music, varying techniques and celebrated musicians, including one-time collaborator Benjamin Britain. The author, who left home to join a circus band, became one of the most prominent percussionists of the 20th Century and played the famous wartime "V for Victory" morse radio notes. He was Professor of Percussion at the Royal Academy of Music in London. First edition inscribed and signed by the author on title page - "Elizabeth, Your interest in my book delights me. Thank you for many happy moments in ??? and friendship. Yours sincerely James Blades Mar 1971" A newspaper picture of author has been tipped in. Light Beige covers with gilt lettering on a blue spine panel, 509pp (inc index) with numerous b/w illustrations. Covers have no serious faults and only very light shelfwear and bumping to head and foot of spine, page edges dusty. Unclipped DJ in similar condition. Heavy book will require extra postage.
