Free endpapers partially embrowned, dustwrapper darkened and quite torn at spine. The author's own copy of his second book, with his (late) ownership inscription, 22 January 1932; from the library of his literary executor, Sir Michael Holroyd. Essays purporting to be literary conversations, in Kermanshah in 1918, with a local reader, "a wealthy man who lived the life of a student and a recluse", named Bahram. They discuss Dickens, Shakespeare, Shaw, Thackeray, Galsworthy, H.G. Wells, Chesterton. Belloc, Oscar Wilde and R.L. Stevenson. "The author, while engaged in stealing mulberries in a garden in Kermanshah, was surprised by the owner of the tree, who courteously invited the thief into his house and proceeded to discourse on English and French literature . . ."
