Oversized hardcover in gray cloth lettered in blue. First edition/ printing (no statements as is correct). Illustrated endpapers. 100 pp. Illustrated with before-and-after photographs of decorated furniture examples and a concluding section of color examples of designs with instructural hints that one could learn to apply. Very good, toning to the edges of the cloth covers (more so to and near the spine). In the scarce original color illustrated dust jacket showing Hunt at work on a chair, worn about the edges and tips. Peter Hunt (1896-1967), a native of East Orange, New Jersey, was an American folk artist known for his decorated, refinished furniture. After serving in France in World War I, he moved to Greenwich Village and then with his mother and father to Provincetown, Massachusetts. He began painting in 1929 in the "privative" or "naive" style; his painting "Peter Hunt's Antique Shop 1930-34" was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in 1941 . He rose to fame in the 1930s, 40s and 50s when his decorated furniture was featured in national magazines such as Life, House Beautiful, and Madamoiselle and pieces from his studio were represented in the upscale New York City departments stores. Hunt did not limit himself to refinishing and decorating old furniture--he also painted household items (a galvanized iron washtub, lamps, small dessert tables, decoys to be used as footstools, etc.) and fabrics. During his Provincetown years, Hunt became well known in society circles and designed interiors and decorative elements for the summer homes of the wealthy, like Helena Rubenstein and Frances Brown Merkel.
