With contributions by Leslie Van Ness Denman,Monroe Tsa Toke, Ida Lone Wolf, and Susan C. Peters. "In the middle nineteen thirties Mrs. Susan C. Peters brought to Inter-Tribal Ceremonial at Gallup a group of young artists and dancers from the Kiowas of Anadarko, Oklahoma. Monroe Tsa Toke brought and exhibited two of his paintings, "The Cormorant," and "The Yellowhammers." During the ceremonial on the evenings there are presented parts of ancient ceremonies intermingled with the dances still surviving, each presented by some on of the twenty-one tribes. Here one begins to realize something of the emotional stir in such Indians as Tsa Toke, a ceremonial drummer, in their participation." (Leslie Van Ness Denman). The book reproduces a series of fourteen tempera paintings by Monroe Tsa Toke, illustrating the Peyote Ritual with explanations in his own words, explaining the meaning of the acts, symbols, and visions of the religion. Beautifully illustrated with fourteen stunning paintings by Tsa Toke's, finely rendered in color reproductions, with descriptive text by Monroe Tsa Toke. Contains one in-text drawing. Association copy with illustrated brown bookplate of Alice C. D. Riley on inside front cover. Riley (1864-1953) was an author and playwright, wrote children's poetry and stories. She is best known for her children's lullaby "Slumber Boat" co-written with her friend Dorothy Gaynor. Very light wear of binding, rubbing and minor chip, and some offsetting of bookplate to free endpaper. Covers with minor staining. Remnants of glue from removed label on inside back cover.
