Item description from seller

Thick octavo. With advertisements at the front: Paxton’s Philadelphia Annual Advertiser (preceded by three engraved advertisement plates), and 12-page almanac at the back. Modern period style quarter calf and marbled paper over boards, gilt stamped green leather spine label, modern laid paper endleaves. Both covers of the original printed wrapper are laid down on the recto and verso of the back free endpaper. Wrapper covers are darkened and chipped at the edges, text pages are uniformly toned, two or three autograph names in page margins, good or better overall. Scarce Philadelphia directory of residents, with much additional information and illustrated advertisements. The directory proper denotes African-American residents with a preceding cross symbol, including Richard Allen (1760-1831), a Methodist minister and abolitionist who inspired Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King; and James Forten (1766-1842), a sailmaker and businessman who employed both Black and white workers, and was one of the wealthiest Philadelphians of his day. A well-preserved copy in a handsome modern binding. Spear locates seven copies. *Spear*, p.279.
