A well presented early edition of Dickens celebrated first novel, The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1837, complete with illustrations by R Seymour and Phiz.

First issued in parts and initially a modest commercial venture, Pickwick Papers quickly became a cultural phenomenon, transforming Dickens into a literary force almost overnight. Its blend of humour, character and social observation helped define the Victorian novel and established the foundation for Dickens later masterpieces.

This copy is bound in a handsome half leather binding with marbled boards, raised bands and gilt titling to the spine. The binding remains firm and attractive, showing expected light wear consistent with age, with a strong shelf presence.

The volume is illustrated throughout, retaining the engraved plates that were central to its original success.

Of particular note, this copy contains interesting associated material. To the front is inserted a printed pamphlet titled The Life of Charles Dickens, published by Haughton and Co, together with an additional printed auction listing relating to the book. These later additions provide an added layer of historical context, reflecting the continued readership and collecting interest surrounding Dickens works in the nineteenth century.
