After a rather slow-moving introduction on the political history, organization, and ideology of the Catholic Church, Hanson, who teaches at Santa Clara University, begins a detailed, competent survey and analysis of the recent world-wide political involvement of the Holy See, regional bishops, religious orders, and Catholic political parties. He focuses on Ireland, Spain, Italy, the Soviet Union, the Eastern bloc, China, the Philippines, Latin America, and the United States, concluding with a look at the Church's involvement in Soviet-American affairs, including Third World competition and arms control.
