Firm in its binding but with the leather binding stained and edges rubbed; light tidemarking to the two front endpapers, one of which bears an 1827 dated ownership signature; diminishing tidemarking to tile and first aprox. 18 leaves; tidemarking to the rear endpapers also, diminishing, to the subscriber list leaves. Text block embrowned. First published in 1721 and also attributed possibility to Robert Manning. In the work, Sheil (or Manning if you prefer) offers what aims to be a clear and rational explanation of the Catholic Church and address what were common misconceptions and criticisms. Catholicism is represented as a rational and reasonable belief system, grounded in historical and theological evidence. The work also addresses some of the challenged and unpopular Catholic views on issues like celibacy, confession and the religion's role in society. The probable author, Robert Manning (1655-1731) was a Roman Catholic priest in England and was a leading figure in that age of English controversialist writing.
