264 pages + 18 engraved solar system plates on 32 extra pages at rear AND two engraved tinted lithographs frontispieces (a double up). small neat inscription on endpaper "Miss E Freebairn? Feb 5th 1858". the book is undated, but this would be on or close to is publication date. The original blind stamped brown ribbed cloth. with gilt tiles on the spine is all very fine with one ruche spot where cloth is dinged and head of spine may have worn down, but without leaving any evidence of that. Uncut page edges, yellow endpapers and contents all near fine. A bit of a freak to have survived so clean and tight. Small octavo. *11 page preface from Cincinnati Observatory, discussing Lord Rosse's Telescope and the City's determination to have a telescope from the 1842 period and the author's disastrous circumstances he was left in having brought to the city the London made instrument to find the observatory burned down in 1844 and he had no means left to re-build for years. We very rarely use "fine" or "mint" as a description, mainly due to the age and the fact that 99.9% of what we sell has been pre-owned and therefor Fine would not be a term for a book we sell despite its fine-like appearance. We always take items back unreservedly if not in the condition as described. We always try to describe fully.
