First edition. Very scarce work. Bound in full contemporary cloth. A brilliant collection of seventy-eight plans referred to in the report of the commissioners appointed to inquire into the application of iron in railway structures. The majority of the plans are folding. Collated, complete. This report from the Royal Commission was established to investigate the uses and properties of iron, following the shocking collapse of Robert Stephenson's Dee Bridge, which took place in Chester in May 1847. This event brought much criticism to the bridge's designer and revealed the weakness of cast iron beam bridges. Experiments were demanded to determine the efficacies of cast and wrought iron, with many prominent engineers of the time being involved in the project, including Henry Cubitt and George Rennie. Bound in full contemporary cloth. Renewed blanks and endpapers. Externally, excellent, with a few marks to cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright, with light scattered spotting to some of the plates, although they largely remain clean. A little edge wear and the occasional closed tear to plates. Very Good.
