First edition. Set of five thick volumes. Full leather, gilt, spotted covers, scuffed joints and spines, rubbed edges, and bumped corners, heads and heels. Scuffs to the front and rear of (ii), wormhole to rear of (iii), scratches to the front and dampstain rear of (v). All edges coloured red. Bookplates inside covers, declaring the set to be from the library of George Winant. Some writing on the endpapers, occasional faint foxing, and occasional spotting, especially towards the end of volume (v), but overall the text block is remarkably clean. The first volume has quotes from Seneca and Montaigne handwritten on the front free endpaper and first blank, respectively. (i) 656, (ii) 688, (iii) 686, (iv) 712, (v) 764pp. Winant was the U.S. ambassador to the U.K. and the lover of Churchill's daughter. John Dryden was appointed England's first Poet Laureate, as well as being a playwright and translator. Plutarch was a Platonist philosopher and Priest at the Temple of Delphi. [Classical Biography] DRYDEN'S EDITION, a reprint. Complete in five volumes. Octavo (20 x 13 x cm), pp.[24] 633 [3]; pp.[6] 624 [2]; pp.[6] 600 [2]; pp.[6] 750 [4]; pp.[6] 736 [2]. With a copper engraved plate for every Life, including that of Plutarch himself, as well as a frontispiece to each volume. Contemporary speckled and panelled calf, with raised bands and gilt decoration to spines. Mostly clean internally, with some worming to volume III, and a proud, slightly loose plate to volume II. Just a touch of worming to top edge of Volume I. All but one original title labels lost. Heavy wear to bindings, with some loss and damage to headcaps and headbands. Good. This edition, known as Dryden's, was first published between 1683 and 1686, with translations provided by various authors, and an introduction and Life of Plutarch by Dryden. Full Leather. Condition: Very Good. Five volumes. Volumes 3, 4 and 5 with irregular pagination, though register complete and continuous. Vol. 1: Pp. [28], [4], 1-128, [1]-656. Frontispiece + 11 engraved plates; Vol. 2: Pp. [6], 688. Frontispiece + 11 engraved plates; Vol. 3: Pp. [4], 684, [2 - publ. adverts.]. Frontispiece + 10 engraved plates; Vol. 4: Pp. [4], 712. Frontispiece + 8 engraved plates; Vol. 5: Pp. [4], 764. Frontispiece + 11 engraved plates. Engravings by Burgers, Vanderbank, James Collins, Sturt, and Robert White; the frontispiece to vol. 1 is signed by Touroude, who may have been the original artist of the other illustrations. Full calf binding, ornate gilt panelled spine, double leather spine labels, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, rebound some time ago by Waters Newcastle. Pages shaved, headlines grazed on occasion.
